A tech pack (technical package) is a structured specification sheet that tells a manufacturer precisely how to build your bag. Think of it as the architectural drawings for a house: the factory is a skilled builder, but they can only build what’s on the plan. A professional handbag tech pack typically runs 5–10 pages — a simple tote might need five, a structured satchel with multiple compartments ten or more — and it covers design intent, materials, construction, measurements, branding, and packaging in one place.

It is also the document that makes quotes comparable. When every factory is pricing the same spec, you can compare FOB prices like-for-like instead of guessing why one quote is half another. That’s why defining your spec is the first step in finding a reliable manufacturer at all.

New brands often send a factory a photo and a paragraph and expect a perfect sample. Section-by-section: how to fill each one

1. Cover & style information

Start every tech pack with a header block: style name, a unique style code, revision number and date, your brand and contact, and the season or collection. When you send a corrected version, bump the revision number — “working from an old rev” is one of the most common (and avoidable) production errors.

2. Technical sketches (flats)

These are clean, 2D line drawings — not artistic renderings. Provide multiple views so the factory sees the whole object: front and back (style & logo placement), side (depth and gussets), base (support panels and feet), and interior (lining and compartments). For anything with removable or layered parts, add an exploded view. You don’t need to be an illustrator — even a clean, dimensioned hand sketch beats a photo, because a photo can’t show construction.

3. Bill of Materials (BOM)

The BOM is the backbone of the pack — a complete inventory of everything that goes into the bag. For each line, specify the material and its weight/thickness (e.g. leather in oz or mm), colour (with a Pantone or physical swatch reference), finish, and where possible a supplier code and minimum order quantity. Cover the shell, lining, interlining/reinforcement, thread, and every piece of hardware: zippers, pulls, sliders, D-rings, O-rings, buckles, rivets, studs, feet, snaps, and magnetic closures. A single missed component — one unspecified zipper pull — can hold up a whole run.

4. Construction & stitching details

This is where premium bags are won or lost. Spell out how the panels are assembled, the stitch types used, and the stitches per inch (SPI) for each seam — higher SPI generally reads as higher quality and holds better under load. Note edge treatments (edge paint, burnishing, skiving, turned edges) and internal reinforcements (foam, board, or mesh) that hold the bag’s shape. If a detail isn’t written down, the factory will default to its cheapest standard.

5. Spec sheet & measurements

List every dimension — height, width, depth, strap length and drop, handle length, pocket sizes, hardware dimensions — keyed to callouts on your sketches. Critically, add tolerances (the allowed variance, e.g. ±0.5 cm). Tolerances tell the factory how much deviation is acceptable and give you an objective line for accepting or rejecting production units.

6. Branding & labeling

Document every brand touchpoint: logo type (embossed, debossed, foil, metal plate), exact placement and size, plus care labels, origin labels, and hangtags. Include artwork files and specify the application method — a debossed logo and a foil-stamped one are different processes at different costs.

7. Packaging & QC criteria

Finish with how the bag is protected and how it will be judged. Specify the dust bag, polybag, inner box, and export carton. Then define your quality-control standard: what to inspect, acceptable defect limits, and the criteria for rejecting a shipment.     Common tech pack mistakes to avoid

    • Sending a photo instead of flats. A photo shows the outside; it can’t communicate construction, layers, or tolerances.
    • Vague materials. “Black leather” invites a substitution. Specify type, thickness, finish, and a colour reference.
    • No tolerances. Without them you have no objective basis to reject an off-spec run.
    • Missing hardware detail. One unspecified component can stall a whole order.
    • No version control. Un-numbered revisions lead to factories building an outdated spec.
    • No QC / rejection criteria. Disputes become “your word vs theirs” instead of a documented standard.

    Do you need tech pack software?
